Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.
As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.
Good morning from Baltimore. We are enjoying springtime temperatures this weekend until the rain/snow returns tonight.
It's been a strange winter so far. We arrived down here at the beginning of February. The snow piled up in the yard was amazing, something you would see in Maine, not in Baltimore. Two weeks after the storm, the roads and interstates still were not completely cleared of snow. Still, the winter down here was better than back home! We got to experience the heavy snowstorm followed by extended periods of below zero temperatures.
Speaking of weather, Mackey was under the weather a few weeks ago. He threw up one Sunday. I didn't think anything of it, until the next day he did it again, twice! He got into a pattern of throwing up several hours after he ate. I called my vet after a few more days of this and they suggested going to a vet to have him checked out.
We went to an emergency vet we have visited in the past. They did an exam and blood work. They didn't find anything wrong, and thought it was just some intestinal infection. They gave him some medication and a list of food for me to prepare.
Wait, what? I don't cook! Luckily, my sister talked me through the basics of boiling the chicken breasts, and the rice and oatmeal had directions on the packets. I have to say, it looked pretty tasty when it was all said and done. Mackey was eating better food than I was. What can I say?
Mackey has made a full recovery and is now NOT eating better food than I am.
Greetings from Playa Del Curtis Bay,
I think that has a much more exotic sound that "the Curtis Bay yard." We've been doing a lot of local work recently, the DC job, a job in downtown Baltimore, and a few trips to an auction yard an hour north of here. I miss the longer runs where I can get longer naps instead of just getting comfortable as the truck stops moving and starts bouncing while being loaded.
At least I've got my health. There I go, using phrases you humans use. At least I haven't started to repeat those stupid jokes John tells!
Anyway, a few weeks ago, I started throwing up after each meal. I wasn't feeling bad or anything else, just couldn't keep anything down. The only consolation was watching John have to clean up the mess. It's almost as satisfying as watching him with a bag after I do my business.
The downside was that I had to go the emergency vet, get checked out, and give up some blood. But, a week of tasty food and tasty medication followed got things all back to normal.
Now it's time for a nice walk around the yard, a treat, and a nap.
