Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.
As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.
Good morning from Charlotte, North Carolina. We have a few days of work down here next week and then back up to Baltimore to finish out the week.
Mackey just finished his breakfast and had his last pain pill.
"Pain pill," you ask? A couple of weeks ago, I accidentally knocked him out of bed while getting up. He made no noise when he landed, but he couldn't put any weight on his front leg. I found an emergency clinic nearby and had them take a look. The X-rays showed no broken bones, so they sent us home with a couple of bottles of pills for pain and inflammation. A few days later, he was much better, and now he's back to 100%! That was a long Sunday, and I'm glad it's in the rear-view mirror.
We've finally settled into the new truck, and it is quite nice. I am sitting in the passenger seat, which pivots around to face the sleeper, where there is a table that pulls out. This makes quite a difference when we have the weekends laying over in the truck.
Next, we'll head home for Thanksgiving. The Pittsfield, Maine, Christmas parade will be the following Saturday.
That about wraps it up for now.
Well, the new truck is starting to feel like home. Slowly, the new truck scent is being replaced by B.O. and beagle. I bet John doesn't even realize these subtle nuances that are taking place here! Sometimes he is so clueless.
Anyway, two weeks ago, I stumbled out of bed (with a little help from John) and landed wrong. There was pain in my shoulder area, so it hurt to put weight on my left leg. John and I went somewhere, and I could tell right away that this wasn't good. We waited in a room that smelled too clean, and then they took me into another room where they put me in all sorts of poses, and then they brought me back. Soon after, they gave John two bottles and we left. Whatever was in those bottles sure made my leg feel better! I still can't figure out what all those poses they put me in were all about, but I got no follow up calls, so I guess it wasn't an audition for the Nutcracker ballet.
Anyway, next week we have another full week, and then up to Maine for the holidays, and John says there will be another Christmas parade.
'Til next time. . .
