Mackey in the Cab Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.

As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.

Mackey in the Cab - August, 2025

John:

Good morning from Cornelius, North Carolina. Mackey and I are in our yard near Charlotte, getting ready for a week of traveling between several jobs within a 300-mile radius of our yard. These are all Duke Energy jobs that the power and energy section has been awarded. It keeps us all busy, which is a good thing.

I'm going to go in a slightly different direction with a project in the Baltimore location earlier in the summer. The US Coast Guard contacted Cianbro about renting space in our upper yard to store three of its ships. I was in the yard when the last ship arrived and was able to watch the process. Mackey spent the whole time with the owner's son. (He'll tell you about that.)

The ship arrived from the Coast Guard's yard across the bay suspended from a giant crane. Then it was lowered onto a self-propelled, heavy-haul dolly at our wharf and moved to our upper yard to join the other two ships. The Coast Guard hired all of its own contractors to make it happen. Cianbro is only providing the storage space, so I was able to be a spectator at this event.

This is another example of the kinds of jobs Cianbro gets involved in and the complexities involved. It's a fun and fascinating place to work.

After it was all over, the ship "landed," and the crews all gone home, I showed the pictures to Mackey, and he didn't seem to be interested at all! Instead, I took him out and let him explore all the things that he was interested in.

Mackey in the Cab - August, 2025Enjoy the rest of summer and have a good Labor Day weekend.

Mackey:

One day, earlier in the summer, we went down to the wharf in the lower yard and saw a ship suspended above the water by a crane heading in our direction. John seemed to be fascinated by this, but I couldn't have cared less.

Just then, a boy came over to the truck and asked if he could say "hi" to me. I barked an enthusiastic ten-four (that's trucker talk for "yes") while John replied the same in regular English. The boy, Chris, was the son of the owner of the rigging company that was in charge of moving the ship to its final storage location in the upper yard.

John got my leash, then Chris and I went off to explore. In all the years I've been down here, I never got to explore as much territory as I did with Chris! He seems to have more energy than John, and was just as curious as I was. I enjoyed being with Chris. I got to pull him where I wanted to go, rather than John pulling me where he wanted to go!

Mackey in the Cab - August, 2025Anyway, John said the ship made it to its new storage spot. Chris and I missed most of it because we were involved in important exploration. (I was really tired when we got back, though.)

I hope more ships are coming so Chris and I can go off and investigate more territory!

That's about all for now.
