Mackey in the Cab Mackey came to B.O.N.E.S. from a bad situation in central Massachusetts. He was underweight and limped painfully. X-rays revealed a displaced femur fracture in his right hind leg – it was amazing that Mackey could use the leg at all. The options didn't look hopeful, but with help from the B.O.N.E.S. Medical Director, a carefully-structured exercise program, and a lot of TLC, he can now lead a normal life.

As Mackey recovered from his injuries, long-time B.O.N.E.S. adopter John was mourning the loss of his long-time beagle companion, Hudson, whose "Chronicles" were documented here for many years. John was settling into a new job with lots of driving, and Mackey loved to ride... a great match. John and Mackey will both share their viewpoints with us on this page.

Mackey in the Cab - June, 2025

John:

Sweltering salutations from broiling Baltimore! Summer is in full swing down here.

We spent last week working out of our Charlotte, North Carolina yard relocating equipment from jobs ending to jobs starting up in the North/South Carolina area. Each day was over 100 degrees, but the morale was impressive! No complaining, just buck up, and get the work done. More impressive for me, since I got to climb back into the truck and enjoy air conditioning while the others were stuck in the heat for the remainder of the day.

The week before, however, was a lot nicer. Mackey and I were on vacation at my sister's beach house in southern Maine with the other siblings and spouses. It was nice to be able to get together for the week and have time to visit and relax. The last day was a reunion with the relatives from my mother's side of the family, some of whom I haven't seen for quite some time.

Next week looks like I'll be around the yard helping with a Coast Guard ship that is arriving Tuesday for storage in our yard! Pictures and story to follow. . .

Mackey:

Sure is hot!

Unlike John, I don't like the heat. I'd much rather be playing in the snow!

Each time I go out to take care of life's necessities, I feel like a rat that's been spotted, scurrying into the shadows, except I'm scurrying to the shadows to get out of the heat! Luckily for me, John remembered to have the AC charged when the truck was in for maintenance while we were on vacation.

Mackey in the Cab - June, 2025Speaking of vacation, we spent a week at the beach, and it was a great time. I got lots of attention and TREATS! I even got a chance to go down to the water and fetch a tennis ball in the surf. Nothing like diving into a wave and grabbing the ball. I sometimes wonder if I was a retriever in a past life.

Towards the end of the week, I was even allowed up on the ottoman while John enjoyed the first cup of coffee before the others awakened. We were both still on the work schedule, and it was nice to have a quiet time!

That's about all for now, time go out and do the rat shuffle.
